At AWE there are dozens of statutory sampling systems spread across the site, spanning many different facilities. The health physics, calibration and maintenance support for these systems comes from a variety of sources, some centralized and others facility based. To ensure consistency of service, AWE invested in a Test and Training Sampling System that could be used to train support staff across site.
While not being used for training, the client wanted to be able to test different ventilation duct configurations to gain a better understanding of how Sampling Systems would perform in new or modified ventilation installations.
Measurement Systems provided a solution that comprised a full site standard particulate sampling system and a flexible extract duct section coupled to a fan and variable speed drive set-up.
The duct was made-up of a number of differing length section and interchangeable extract ventilation features, such as dampers, flow straightener, Isokinetic Sample Probe section with a clear viewing window and a set of Isokinetic Sample Nozzles. An injection point was added to the fan inlet which allows particulate/smoke injections and the clear window provides visual feedback as to the profile around the Isokinetic Sample Nozzle.

Another issue in the nuclear industry is the calibration of flow meters and other instrumentation installed into systems where potential contamination is present. In these situations the instruments cannot be simply sent back to the manufacturers or calibration laboratory. Measurement Systems has provided many calibrations rigs to overcome this and other site based problems experienced by our clients. The photograph below shows the inside of a Variable Area (VA) flow meter calibration rig. Able to provide a variety of flows and employing mass flow technology, the rig allows our client to annually calibrate their VA flow meters to nationally traceable standards.

Flow Grids
Whether you require flow measurement as part of a statutory sampling/monitoring system, or just need to know the flow within a large pipe, duct or stack, we have the solution.
With a dedicated Flow Division, RM&C can offer a wide range of flow products; however Measurement Systems uses two main types of flow measurement device. The Insertable Averaging Pitot Tube or a custom Flow Grid, depending on the installation conditions and accuracy required.
The Insertable Averaging Pitot Tube is used on applications where there are sufficient straight lengths of duct to produce a uniform flow velocity profile. The Pitot is easily installed into the duct (or stack) via a variety of flanged connections or compression fittings. Multiple Pitots can be used to form an array, where installation conditions are not ideal.
Where there are very short lengths of straight duct or a higher accuracy is required, then a custom Flow Grid is available. The ‘grid’ is mounted into a section of duct to form an integral part of the ducting system (or stack section). This can be tested and supplied with a ‘K’ Factor Certificate of calibration on-site. A flow straightener can also be mounted into the grid section to help condition the flow and maximise the measurement accuracy by reducing the effects of turbulence and cross flows.
Isokinetic Sample Probes
The most important functions of a regulatory sampling system is, representative sampling and sampling efficiency. The Isokinetic Sample Probe (inc. nozzle) is a key element of achieving this, as is the interconnecting sample pipe-work through to the collection point (filter).
The RM&C Measurement Systems design of Particulate Sample Probe gives the best possible flow path for the sampled particulates, offering a smooth, transition and crevice free path through to the collection point. Fully welded using stainless steel components, with a number of mounting/connection options, these probes are the highest quality available and will outperform many lower cost alternatives.
In addition to designing and manufacturing a full range of Isokinetic and Gaseous Sample Probes, we are able to offer Best Practicable Means (BPM) advice to our clients at the design stage, regarding the optimum probe location.
One factor which determines the positioning of the sample probe is the velocity profile. To ensure the positioning of the probes and the sampling pipe-work meets BPM requirements, we often conduct pre-design flow profiling and characterisation studies. Our engineers work closely with AEA Technology, who are the UK’s leading independent authority on aerosol transport modeling, testing and characterisation studies to ensure the:

Selected by DSRL as the preferred supplier of sampling systems during an evaluation of their existing arrangements, over thirty-five sampling systems have now been successfully accepted by the regulating body for statutory use.

Roxspur Measurement & Control Ltd is an ISO 9001:2008 company, we offer UKAS and traceable calibration under BS/EN ISO17025 accredited procedures. Our certificate generation systems are purposely geared to meet the strict and specific requirement of the Aerospace industry.
Calibration
Based at our factory in Sheffield our accredited laboratories are available to provide either on-site or in-house calibration to either UKAS or national standards. We cover Temperature (up to 2,200ºC), Pressure (up to 1,200 bar), Flow (up to 2,500 L/min) and Electrical parameters and provide certification using the latest technology.
Our team of experienced on-site engineers hold accreditation for the on-site calibration of equipment including autoclaves, furnaces, thermocouples and probes, scales and balances, ovens and chambers, indicators and controllers, pressure and electrical. We cover the full spectrum of industry sectors. All calibration standards used meet the requirements of Table 3 of AMS 2750D, whether in the laboratory or on site, ensuring full compliance with the specification.
